Service 06 / 07Copyright Objection

Answer the letter before the file closes.

Copyright applications draw two kinds of challenge — a discrepancy letter from the Registry, or an objection from someone claiming the work is theirs. Both are answerable, and both have deadlines.

Overview

A discrepancy is paperwork. An objection is a claim.

A discrepancy letter usually means a document is missing, an NOC is unsigned or the particulars don’t match. An objection means a third party has told the Registry the work is not yours — and the Registrar will hear both sides before deciding.

We work out which you have, answer it with the evidence that supports your authorship, and represent you at the hearing if one is fixed.

Reply to Copyright Objection questions

Answers before you even ask

The questions clients ask us most about reply to copyright objection.

Still have a question?

How long do I have to reply?

The letter states the deadline, usually 30 days. Missing it can mean the application is treated as abandoned, so send it to us as soon as it arrives.

Someone has objected to my copyright application. What happens now?

The Registrar gives both sides a chance to be heard and then decides. What matters is documentary evidence of when you created the work — we'll tell you honestly how strong your record is.

Can you take over an application filed by someone else?

Yes. We need the diary number and an authorisation from you, and we can pull the file from the Registry.
